The Growing Popularity of Indie OPM Music Along The Metro

Published on

Recently, millennials have a grown appreciation to former underrated indie scene in the Philippines, starting with SUD, Autotelic, IV of Spades, Ben & Ben and Moira. Now other performers are being recognized and gig bars like Route 196, Saguijo Makati, Social House, Jess & Pat’s and many more are becoming active due to the increase of audiences for live shows of the mentioned artists. Many say that the OPM scene is once again alive and kicking but according to the musicians: “it never really died it just became more appreciated during these times”.

Our independent artists are now being recognized globally, with IV of Spades curating their live concerts in Indonesia, becoming an opening act for the internationally famous band Panic! At the Disco and the growing fanbase not only in Asia but also across borders. These are only a few of our recognized artists there are also more like Clara Benin, Jess Connelly, Ben & Ben and Reese Lansangan who had performed live in various concerts abroad.

With this, many aspiring bands and or solo artists are trying out their luck in the field and showcasing their talents to be discovered and to share their souls turned into sound for the audiences. With their idols becoming their inspiration to continue on as struggling musicians, which is not an easy thing to pursue at these times. There are a lot of unrecognized indie bands and artists as such so we should always support our local indie scene by listening to their songs, attending live performances, and buying their albums and merchandise.
